Infy's First recruitment AD. in 1991..
Only 64 brilliant young engineers are destined to conquer the world of software. Find out if you are one of them this Saturday.
As Infosys moved to new markets and new clients came on board, recruitment had to keep pace. This ad, which appeared in 1991, created quite a buzz. Infoscion Ananth Vaidyanathan, who applied and joined, recalls, "Infosys was a little-known company. Most applicants were enthused by the ad. A huge crowd turned up, more than a 1,000 there was a virtual stampede." So much so that the glass doorway at the hotel, where the interviews were being conducted, came crashing down!
Ananth remembers that they were divided into batches of 100 for the test, and things were impeccably organized. Only a small number finally made it to the next round and finally, 16 candidates were selected. The interview rounds were conducted by Nandan Nilekani and N. S. Raghava.

The Millau viaduct is part of the new E11 expressway connecting Paris and Barcelona and features the highest bridge piers ever constructed. The tallest is 240 meters high and the overall height will be an impressive 336 meters, making this the highest bridge in the world.
This bridge is between Sweden and Denmark.
Truly a marvelous piece of Engineering!!! The bridge ( or should it be called tunnel ) goes under water to allow movement of ships.

Mangalore violence some more pics oct 5 - 2
Update 11.30 pm IST
Oct 5: Thursday October 4 could well go in the annals of Mangalore as the "Dark Day" owing to communal clashes that rocked the town and its surroundings.
People, who had gone to bed on Wednesday night without the slightest of hints of violence that was to follow, were in all kinds of difficulties owing to the sudden bundh.
While the transport system came to a standstill, schools, colleges and business concerns remained closed for the entire day. Despite tight police vigil, violence continued in some areas. It was only late in the evening that situation was brought under control and a few people dared to come on the streets.
The fresh reports from our correspondents who are still keeping a vigilant eye on the happenings said that as of now situation is slowly getting better if not normal. Yet police security is deployed in almost all areas. The worship places of both the communities have been provided with adequate security while SP B Dayananda and other senior officials are handling the situation admiringly well.
Police who were deployed in Baba Budangiri are said to have been summoned back to assist law and order situation in and around the city. KSRTC buses resumed plying in the evening while some small shops too were opened to cater to people's needs. However nothing is clear about Friday.
Though schools and colleges have not declared a holiday, it is quite clear that they would think twice before re-opening the schools on Friday.
It was after a long time that such intense incidents of violence occurred in the city. It was more than a year ago during the funeral procession of Polali Ananthu that city had witnessed these kind of ugly incidents. Something similar was happening on Thursday, as no one was willing to cooperate with police in maintaining law and order. Finally police had no other option than opening fire, caning the mobs and even bursting tear gas.
The incident has once again proved that the currently, the district remains as one of most sensitive areas in the state. While a well-organized and pre-planned Karnataka bundh had little response in the district, a non-planned, sudden bundh call had more effect in the city. Not a single private bus did ply on roads even in the early hours of Thursday.

Violence Abates – Situation Under Control
5.00 pm, IST
The situation now seems to be under control. From dawn the city and outskirts have been dotted with instances of violence. However pro-active policing by the DK police has brought the situation under control.
The dynamic DK SP B Dayanand had personally been on rounds to all the hyper-sensitive areas in and around Mangalore. The SP who has been tirelessly monitoring the situation from Wednesday night was seen at the spot of violence with his best efforts to bring the situation under control. The major set back that several persons observed was that the police were not prepared to handle such a situation as a police platoon had been sent to Baba Budangiri.
After the major group clash in the Bunder area in Mangalore where the police resorted to bursting of tear gas no major untoward incident has been occurred.
One cannot ignore the role of rumors that have been widespread from Wednesday night in creating tension and fear. The city grew peaceful by 5 pm.
Section 144 will however be continued till Oct 7.

Sex, drugs, rock & roll: Employees of BPO firms under scanner
Now, some companies are seen to be cracking down on these activities, as part of a clean-up operation, both to improve the image of the business, and in the fear that young drug users would be easily susceptible to data and information theft.
Several leading companies have sacked employees on grounds of sexual acts or drug abuse in the work premises in recent times. Some like Mphasis have gone to the extent of keeping conference rooms closed at night to prevent misuse of these facilities. Some are tying up with laboratories to do random tests on employees for drug use.
While most companies are reluctant officially to admit that they confront such problems in their own workplaces, one BPO official said on condition of anonymity: "Being part of a permissive community — in terms of age factor, financial independence, freedom and cover of the night — BPO boys and girls are quite susceptible and are easy prey to sex or drug abuses. Dozens of such cases are reported and action taken, but nei ther the employers nor employees are willing to talk about it, since no one wants to get a bad name."
Arun Sethuraj (name changed), who was working in a leading BPO company, was sacked two months ago along with two other colleagues for drug abuse. "Those two friends of mine were into drugs. But the company associated me with them and I too was sacked," he says.
Nobby Nazareth, president of employee verification company Evaluationz India, says that sexual acts at the work premises impact the 'personality' and brand of the company, creating a poor image of the company among clients and resistance in the minds of parents to having their children associate themselves with such companies (a huge issue today when talent is scarce). "As for drug abuse, it directly impacts the productivity of the employee and is also a big threat to BPOs dealing with sensitive data," he says, adding that the uncovering of several BPO frauds in recent months is building a sense of urgency to deal with such issues.
C Mahalingam, HR head of IT and outsourcing company Symphony Services, says these particular problems in call centres/BPOs are not as big as is often made out to be, but admits that companies need to do a lot more in terms of background checks of employees and conduct orientation programmes and have counsellors in place.
